Sardinia targets 2028 Vuelta a España start with €7.5 million bid
The Italian island aims to secure the opening three stages of the Spanish Grand Tour to boost international sports tourism and mark a major historical anniversary.

Sardinia has launched a formal push to host the start of the 2028 Vuelta a España, allocating €7.5 million in regional funding to secure the opening three stages of the race.
As reported by the local newspaper La Nuova Sardegna, the regional assembly approved the budget to bid for hosting rights for the opening stages of the Vuelta in late August 2028.
The three-stage opening hosting plan coincides with international celebrations marking the 700th anniversary of the establishment of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
The bid is part of a concerted effort by Sardinia’s local government to pitch for major sporting events in a drive to promote the island as a destination for sports tourism.
Sardinia hosted a preliminary regatta for the America’s Cup in May, while the Giro di Sardegna returned to the calendar in February after a hiatus.
