Soler trades Pogacar duty for Ayuso support at Worlds

Marc Soler arrives in Rwanda with a role both familiar and altered. At UAE Team Emirates, he so often rides in support of Tadej Pogačar, but at the World Championships, he trades the white jersey of his team for the red of Spain. This time, Juan Ayuso is the protected rider at his side, and Pogačar stands across the divide as rival.

Spain’s strategy is simple in outline, difficult in execution. Ayuso is the leader and must be shielded, while teammates anticipate the long-range moves of Pogačar and Remco Evenepoel.

“The idea is to protect Juan for those moves by the big guys. It’s not just them, there are more. The rest of us must anticipate so that, when they arrive, they already have accumulated fatigue," said Soler to Marca, who recognises the scale of the challenge. “In a one-on-one with Pogačar or Evenepoel, it is very difficult, but as a group we can be stronger.”

He knows how dangerous Pogačar can be when left unchecked. “If he has a good day, it is very complicated. We will have to try to isolate him, make him spend more than usual, although it is difficult.”

That realism is balanced by faith in Ayuso, whose Vuelta displayed both form and maturity. “He had a great Vuelta, both individually and with the team. He is in very good shape and I think he will be able to show it on Sunday.” For himself, Soler sees the role clearly. “I know what I am here for, who the clear favourites are, and my idea is to anticipate and help Juan.”

Breakaways may be part of that plan. “Yes, it could be. The team we are bringing is very balanced, with riders capable of doing that job. We are covered.”

The answers from the Catalan reflect a recurring theme: Spain’s strength must come from unity, even as criticism of recent results lingers. “The important thing is to compete. We always give our maximum. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t, but we always give 100% and a bit more. That is what we will try to do in Rwanda.”

Soler acknowledges that the first Worlds on African soil will be dictated as much by heat, humidity and altitude as by tactics. “The heat, humidity and pollution will be tough factors. The roads are good, but those conditions will demand extra effort.” For Soler, discovery and hardship are inseparable. “I like to discover new places with the bike, to suffer and to enjoy in places like Rwanda.”

The paradox of Soler’s season is that he belongs to the strongest squad in cycling, yet here his loyalties shift. “It is the best team in the world and proves it every year. Anyone could win, but here it’s not UAE, it’s the Spanish national team. We come to give our maximum for this jersey.”

For Soler, the measure of success is modest but clear. “A podium is always a success. Being as close as possible would be positive.” Spain may not match Pogačar or Evenepoel man for man, but in unity, they still believe they can shape the story.
