Unlike traditional team time trials where the time of the fourth rider counts, the Critérium du Dauphiné, now called the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, once again uses the individual time of each rider to determine the general classification. That makes the stage especially important for GC competitors, as riders dropped from their team could lose significant time.

The stage will also serve as an important dress rehearsal for the Tour de France. The 2026 Tour begins with a team time trial in Barcelona, meaning many teams will be eager to deliver a strong performance and build confidence ahead of the Grand Départ.

The stage takes place in and around Le Perreux, with both the start and finish located in the same town. The route covers 28.4 kilometres and looks more demanding than a straightforward time trial, with two notable uphill sections on the way to Coutouvre and Montagny. Together, those climbs account for around eight kilometres of ascending, making pacing a key factor.

After Montagny, the course opens up into a fast final eight kilometres back towards Le Perreux. The finish is not entirely flat either, with the final kilometre rising noticeably and reaching gradients of up to 7%.

Teams will start at four minute intervals. Team Picnic PostNL will be the first team down the ramp at 15:05 CET, while race leader Alex Baudin’s EF Education-EasyPost squad will be the final team to start at 16:29.
