The 2026 Giro after Corno alle Scale: where do the GC contenders stand?
Stage 9 to Corno alle Scale was the second summit finish of the 2026 Giro d'Italia and the last GC test before the rest day, and the day delivered exactly the kind of further reshuffle expected. Jonas Vingegaard took his second stage of the race and another bite out of Afonso Eulálio's lead, while Giulio Pellizzari had a day to forget.

Jonas Vingegaard won stage 9 to Corno alle Scale, attacking inside the final kilometre to drop Felix Gall and take his second Giro stage of the race ahead of Davide Piganzoli, who delivered a strong third for Visma | Lease a Bike. The Dane gained 40 seconds on race leader Afonso Eulálio, closing the gap to 2:24 going into Monday's rest day.
Eulálio held the pink jersey for the third stage running, with the Portuguese rider finishing fifth on the day and limiting his losses to Vingegaard once again. Gall now sits at 2:59 behind the leader in third overall.
The biggest shuffle behind the top three came from Pellizzari and Scaroni. The Italian, who started the day fifth on GC, cracked early on the final climb and finished 1:27 down on Vingegaard, dropping out of the top five entirely and losing his second place in the maglia bianca classification to Mathys Rondel in the process.
Christian Scaroni, by contrast, continued his outstanding opening week, only slipping one place to fifth overall, building on his fourth place from the stage 8 breakaway.
Jai Hindley is now Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe's lead GC card, moving up to fourth at 4:32 after the Australian held with the GC group on the final climb. Thymen Arensman finished fourth on the stage and remains a top-ten threat.
There remain real questions about how the GC settles on Tuesday's stage 10 time trial, a 42km flat effort from Viareggio to Massa. Vingegaard is the clear favourite, and the gap between him and Eulálio is widely expected to close substantially if not flip entirely. Gall's TT history is well below the Dane's, and the order behind Vingegaard could look very different by Tuesday evening.
The Dane also continues to lead the mountains classification by 51 points over Diego Pablo Sevilla, meaning he'll start the ITT in the blue KOM skinsuit. Eulálio retains the white jersey for now, with Rondel set to ride the time trial in the under-25 skinsuit after Pellizzari's slip.
