'The gap between Remco and Pogacar is still wide' - Pauwels on the competitive gap at the top of cycling
Belgian national coach Serge Pauwels has delivered an honest assessment of the difference between Remco Evenepoel and Tadej Pogacar, stating that despite Evenepoel's move to Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, the gap remains significant.

Speaking at a Belgian Cycling safety event, Pauwels reflected on what has been a successful season for Belgian cycling, while acknowledging the work still needed for Evenepoel to reach Pogacar's level.
"Today, the gap is still wide," Pauwels said to Direct Velo, about the difference between the two riders. "To reach the level of Pogacar at the Tour or the World Championships, it will certainly take more than a year. But that's his challenge."
Despite this gap, Belgium enjoyed a medal-rich season across elite and under-23 categories. "If I look at the categories, we arrive at eight medals in total: three at the World Championships and five at the Europeans," said Pauwels. "Remco was sublime, but there was still a better one."
The Belgian coach explained that modern racing dynamics have changed significantly, often leaving Evenepoel isolated in key moments. "The finals start very early: it's almost mano a mano from the last 70 kilometres. Ten years ago, we still managed to be seven or eight in a group in the last two rounds. Today, races are exploding much faster."
When discussing strategy against the dominant Pogacar, Pauwels revealed their approach at the European Championships. "We had a clear plan: isolate Pogacar and provoke a mano a mano with Remco. Pogacar was even stronger, but the plan existed."
Pauwels believes the key difference between the two stars isn't just raw power but how they manage their efforts. "Many focus on attack numbers, but the key is how you get to the bump. In Lombardy, everyone was already 'dead' when he attacked. It's not the minute of effort that counts, it's to arrive fresh before the effort."
Looking ahead to the 2026 World Championships in Montreal, Pauwels is already formulating strategies and considering his rider lineup. Wout van Aert has expressed interest in the Canadian course, with Pauwels noting: "With Wout, it's always a question of dialogue and transparency."
The coach also highlighted emerging talent Jarno Widar as a potential "plan B" for future races. "If his progress continues, he can aim for the top 10 of stages in Grand Tours. He's already beaten Seixas twice, and you can see what Seixas is doing."
