Tim Wellens commits future to UAE as trio extend contracts
UAE Team Emirates-XRG have announced contract extensions for Tim Wellens, Vergard Stake Laengen and Julius Johansen. Wellens has committed his future until the end of 2027, meanwhile, Laengen and Johansen will remain with the team through 2026.

Since signing with the team from Lotto Soudal for the 2023 season, Wellens has established himself as a valuable member of the squad, capable of going for his own success and supporting the exploits of his teammates, including Tadej Pogačar.
Wellens won the Renewi Tour in successive seasons in 2023 and 2024, establishing himself as the record winner of the race with four victories.
Meanwhile, 2025 may have been his best season yet, becoming the Belgian road race champion, as well as winning a stage of the Tour de France whilst supporting Pogačar to a fourth yellow jersey.
"It was a straightforward decision for me to continue with UAE Team Emirates-XRG. I feel truly appreciated within the team, and I also appreciate everything the team does for me," said Wellens in a statement released by the team.
The 34-year-old Belgian will no doubt be aiming to play an important role in Pogačar securing a record-equalling fifth Tour de France next Summer as well as more major one-day races.
"I'm honoured and proud to spend more years with the best team in the world, surrounded by the best people – not only the riders but all the staff as well. Here, I've found the perfect balance between supporting the team and riding for others, while still having my own opportunities," said Wellens.
36-year-old Norwegian veteran Laengen is one of the team's longest-serving riders, having joined at its inception in 2017. The experienced road captain has played a crucial role in three Grand Tour victories as a domestique for Pogacar.
Completing the trio of extensions is the 26-year-old Dane Johansen, who has developed into a versatile support rider in his debut season with the team.
