Tom Skujins sidelined for the Spring Classics

Tom Skujiņs will miss the Spring Classics for the first time in over a decade, the 34-year-old Lidl-Trek rider confirmed via social media. The news comes after a difficult period marked by illness and limited training.

“For the first time in 10+ years I won’t be doing any Spring Classics. Definitely gutted, but also quite impressed that I have made such a long stint in our sport where crashes and sickness are always part of the game,” Skujiņš wrote. “Barely ridden my bike since leaving Paris Nice early. Reset button.”

The Latvian had opened his Classics season during Opening Weekend, finishing 36th at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and lining up again at Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne finishing 59th, showing early presence before his campaign was derailed.

His setback came at Paris-Nice, where he abandoned before stage 5, following the apocalyptic fourth stage that was defined by brutal conditions including heavy rain and strong winds. The chaotic day caused widespread disruption in the peloton and ultimately marked the end of Skujiņš’ race.

In recent years, Skujiņš has established himself as a strong contender in one-day races, highlighted by fifth place finishes at last year’s European Championships and World Championships.

While his absence is a blow for Lidl-Trek heading into the Classics, the team has also received a major boost through the rapid return of Mads Pedersen.

The Dane made a far earlier than expected comeback after breaking his collarbone and wrist, returning to racing just six weeks later and immediately delivering with a fourth place at Milan-Sanremo.

“It was incredible work from everyone,” Pedersen said after the race in a video of the team. “To be that committed to me after five or six months without racing, coming back here six weeks after the operation, and still give me full support and ride like that in the final… it’s absolutely incredible.”

His performance not only highlights a remarkable recovery, but also puts him straight back among the key contenders for the remainder of the Spring Classics.
