Tour de France 2029: Berlin preferred for German Grand Départ bid
Berlin is set to play a central role in Germany’s attempt to host the Grand Départ of the Tour de France in 2029. The ASO have signaled a clear preference for the capital, especially with the 40th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall approaching.

Andreas Prokop, the deputy chairman of the Grand Départ 2030 associatio, gave an update to Der Tagesspiegel about the status is the bid. “We are in very good discussions,” he said, referring to talks held in Paris two weeks ago with race organizer ASO. According to Prokop, the meeting was constructive and went beyond general interest. For the first time, both sides explored in detail whether a German bid would realistically succeed.
The message from Paris was clear. “We were told that Berlin is desired as part of the concept,” Prokop confirms. That aligns with earlier remarks by Tour director Christian Prudhomme, who has repeatedly underlined the importance of historical context when choosing international start locations for the Tour de France.
In 2029, Germany marks 40 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. From the French perspective, that anniversary offers a powerful narrative frame for the start of cycling’s most prestigious race. It would also echo history. The Tour began in West Berlin in 1987, when the city was still divided. A return more than four decades later would carry symbolic weight well beyond sport.
The German initiative originally aimed to stage the race in eastern Germany in 2030 without involving the capital. The concept focused on regions that rarely host major global events and sought to draw inspiration from the legacy of the Peace Race, once a flagship event across East Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia.
That approach is now being reconsidered. Without Berlin, insiders concede, the bid would face an uphill battle. If the capital becomes the confirmed prologue venue, existing route plans will have to be revised.
There is also a shift in timing. While 2030 was the initial target, Prokop indicates that 2029 may be more realistic in light of the feedback from Paris. Competition remains strong, particularly from Prague and from Slovenia. Still, the preference for Berlin has been clearly communicated.
