Hat-trick for Evenepoel as he wins Trofeo Andratx–Pollença

Reaching the penultimate day of the Challenge Mallorca series and in store was another day of climbing in the saddle with the Trofeo Andratx - Pollença. The race was shortened by 21 kilometres due to severe wind, taking the total distance to 121.5 kilometres. Evenepoel was also on the start list for the final time in the series and aimed to make it three wins from three in Red Bull colours.

The day began with relative ease just after lunch time on the Spanish island, with a breakaway of 7 riders quickly establishing themselves up the road, including Raúl García Pierna (Movistar) and Giro d'Italia stage winner Jonathan Caicedo (Petrolike).

Unfortunately for the break's chance of a victory, they proved to be slim as behind the group, the peloton was led and controlled by Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe for Remco Evenepoel.

The main climb of the day for the riders to tackle was the Coll de Puig Major (14.2km at 5.9%) and that is where Evenepoel shot off yet again, but unlike the day prior, Evenepoel had bigger company with riders including Christian Scarni (XDS-Astana), Ivan Romeo (Movistar), Maxim Van Gils (Red Bull) amongst others who were involved in a significantly reduced group.

Heading into the descent of Puig Major, the front group was still together. Then Evenepoel launched a huge attack and ripped the race apart, living up to his ‘Aero Bullet’ nickname. Only the young Frenchman Mathys Rondel (Tudor) could latch onto his wheel. The pair pushed on towards Pollença with the chasers a minute back, setting up a two man duel on the run-in.

With 2.5 kilometres to go, Evenepoel shook Rondel off the wheel. Still, the gap was only slim as Evenepoel settled into a rhythm as Rondel desperately tried to get back onto Evenepoel’s wheel, but it simply wasn't to be as Evenepoel made it three wins from three in Red Bull colours with Rondel taking a valiant second place. It was more joy for Red Bull as Van Gils took third.
