Video: New footage reveals the severity of Evenepoel’s Catalunya crash
Two weeks after Remco Evenepoel’s crash on stage three of the Volta a Catalunya, new footage has emerged highlighting the severity of the impact. The images clearly show the Belgian being thrown over his handlebars, seemingly with his brakes fully locked.

Evenpoel had animated the finale together with Jonas Vingegaard after breaking clear in the crosswinds, building a small advantage over the peloton heading into the final kilometre. That advantage disappeared just before a roundabout, where Evenepoel lost control and hit the ground.
Speaking after the finish, the Belgian pointed to an unexpected cause. “I wanted to move to the drops and at that moment there was a hole in the road that I didn’t see, and it wasn’t marked. Then I lost my handlebar,” Evenepoel told Sporza.
For Vingegaard, the crash seemed to come out of nowhere. “To be honest, I don’t know what happened,” the Dane said afterwards to Eurosport. “He just catapulted over the bars and I only hope he’s okay. It looked crazy.”
Despite the crash, the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider managed to finish the stage and continue the race, eventually placing fifth overall at 2:13 behind winner Jonas Vingegaard.
His impressive follow up performance at the Tour of Flanders, where he finished third behind Tadej Pogačar and Mathieu van der Poel, further showed that the Belgian suffered little lasting impact from his injuries, despite the crash having the potential to end very differently.
