Video: UAE Team Emirates-XRG car windshield smashed after collision with Rondel on Giro stage 5

With just under 100km remaining on stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia, the TV cameras spotted that the UAE Team Emirates-XRG car’s rear window was broken.

Speaking to Jens Voigt on the race motorbike for TNT Sports, UAE confirmed that a Tudor rider had crashed into the back of their car, causing the rear window to break.

According to RAI, Mathys Rondel was the Tudor rider involved in the incident, but the Frenchman remained in the race. Voigt later confirmed that Rondel was indeed the rider in question.

Tudor then confirmed Rondel’s involvement after his name had first been mentioned, according to In de Leiderstrui. The team said the 22-year-old Frenchman was able to continue despite the incident. “Our sports director in the car has confirmed that he is okay. Of course, Mathys will be fully checked by the medical staff after the finish.”

UAE Team Emirates-XRG have already endured plenty of bad luck at this Giro, with Marc Soler, Jay Vine and Adam Yates all forced to abandon before the race reached Italy. With poor weather conditions on stage 5, it was far from an ideal day for UAE to be dealing with a broken windshield, or for Rondel to have crashed.
