Vincenzo Nibali believes Giro innovation could define outcome of the race

The Giro d’Italia is rarely decided by a single moment, but in 2026 a relatively new feature could have a bigger influence than expected according to former Giro winner Vincenzo Nibali.

For Vincenzo Nibali, winner of the Giro d’Italia in 2013 and 2016, the Red Bull kilometre is no longer a novelty but a factor that could seriously influence the way that the race will unfold.

“The Red Bull kilometre can even decide the race,” he said to Gazzetta dello Sport, pointing to the growing importance of bonus seconds in modern stage racing.

The mechanism is simple. On 20 of the 21 stages, the first three riders across a designated point collect six, four and two seconds respectively. What has changed is where that point sits.

In 2026, organisers have moved it closer to the finish, often inside the final 20 kilometres, forcing contenders to engage at precisely the moment when stages are already at their most volatile.

“In the early stages, the bonuses are crucial because only a few seconds make the difference,” Nibali said. “Sprinters might even be forced into something like a double sprint.”

That shift in placement is deliberate. The Giro has sought to create more aggressive racing in the final kilometres, not only among stage hunters but also within the group of overall contenders.

Nibali points to a historic example to underline the point. “In 2012, the bonuses were decisive when Ryder Hesjedal beat Joaquim Rodríguez by just 16 seconds,” he said. “With the Red Bull KM, managing the race tactically becomes even more important.”

Last year, Isaac del Toro, who led the race on the penultimate stage, before slipping to 2nd behind Simon Yates, picked up 14 seconds across the Red Bull KM’s, illustrating that there is an opportunity to make a difference in the GC via gaining them.

The 2026 Giro d’Italia starts on May 8 with three stages in Bulgaria. Jonas Vingegaard stands out as the leading contender, while João Almeida is seen as his main challenger, despite a difficult start to the 2026 season.

Other GC contenders lining up are: Derek-Gee West (Lidl-Trek), Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Enric Mas (Movistar), Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), Matthew Riccitello (Decathlon CMA CGM) and Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM).
