Vingegaard dismisses transfer rumours after sponsor speculation

Jonas Vingegaard has dismissed suggestions that he could be heading for Netcompany Ineos, insisting he has had no contact with the newly backed British team despite growing speculation around its Danish connection.

The transfer talk began after Danish technology company Netcompany was announced as a major partner of Ineos Grenadiers. The agreement, reported to be worth around €100 million over five years, will see the team race as Netcompany Ineos and is part of a wider push to return the former Team Sky structure to the front of the sport.

According to The Guardian, Ineos had already shown interest in Vingegaard last year. Their signing of Oscar Onley also underlined that the team is prepared to spend heavily to bring in riders from direct rivals.

But speaking at the Giro d’Italia team presentation in Burgas, Bulgaria, the Visma | Lease a Bike rider made clear that no talks have taken place.

“I can almost read that I have practically signed already. But no, I have not spoken to them,” Vingegaard told Feltet.

Asked whether his agent’s presence at a MyPreffy event in Tivoli had been linked to talks with Netcompany, he rejected the suggestion.

“No, it wasn’t. He was there to support us. So no, I have not spoken to Netcompany.”

The denial follows comments from Bjarne Riis, who has publicly encouraged Vingegaard to consider the project. Riis, Denmark’s last Tour de France winner before Vingegaard, told B.T. that the new team could be an ideal fit if Vingegaard wants to challenge Tadej Pogačar.

“Right now, it would be a dream team for Jonas. The best team he could possibly join if he wants to challenge Tadej Pogačar,” Riis said.

“I absolutely see a match. Visma won’t be happy to hear that, but there’s no doubt. This new team has the people, the resources and the experience required.”

Ineos was once the dominant force in Grand Tour racing. Launched as Team Sky in 2010 under Dave Brailsford, the squad won seven Tours de France between 2012 and 2019. In recent years, however, it has fallen behind teams such as UAE Team Emirates-XRG and Visma | Lease a Bike, while rivals including Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, Lidl-Trek and Decathlon CMA CGM have increased their financial power.

Netcompany’s arrival is seen as part of an effort to change that. Chief executive André Rogaczewski has said the aim is to win the Tour de France within five years.

Vingegaard remains under contract with Visma | Lease a Bike until the end of 2028. He joined the team in 2019 and has since won the Tour de France twice, as well as the Vuelta a España. In December 2025, he told Ekstra Bladet that he could not see himself riding anywhere else.

Even so, his long term future has remained a subject of debate. Last summer, his wife, Trine Marie Vingegaard Hansen, criticised aspects of Visma’s setup in an interview with Politiken. Vingegaard has since repeatedly rejected any suggestion that he is unhappy at the team.
