Visma shut down surprise Jonas Vingegaard comeback reports

Vingegaard has not raced since fracturing his right collarbone in a crash on stage 15 of the Tour de France. Visma subsequently announced in August that he would not compete again this year, with his attention instead turning towards a full recovery and the 2027 season.

That position has not changed.

Italian outlet CyclingTime reported on Monday that Vingegaard’s recovery had progressed sufficiently for a possible late change of plans, suggesting that the European Championships in Slovenia on October 4 and Il Lombardia on October 10 could emerge as targets.

The report claimed Vingegaard had returned to significant training loads and could potentially resume racing several weeks before the European Championships in order to rebuild race rhythm.

However, following enquiries from Domestique, the Dutch team confirmed that Vingegaard will not race again this season.

When Visma announced the end of Vingegaard’s season, the two time Tour de France winner explained that his collarbone injury had delayed his return to training to such an extent that reaching his usual level before the end of the campaign was no longer realistic.

“After a long and intense racing period, a recovery period was planned after the Tour de France anyway,” Vingegaard said at the time. “Due to the collarbone injury, the start of my training has been delayed and it is not possible for me to get back to top level in the coming period.”

“The focus is on preparing optimally for the goals of the 2027 season. I will discuss these specific goals with the team in the coming period.”

Before that announcement, Vingegaard had left open the possibility of representing Denmark at the World Championships in Montreal on September 27, although he repeatedly stressed that any decision would depend on the progress of his recovery.

Those plans were eventually abandoned, and despite the latest speculation surrounding a possible appearance at the European Championships or Il Lombardia, Visma’s position remains unchanged.

Vingegaard therefore finishes 2026 with 51 race days and one of the most significant seasons of his career behind him.

He won Paris-Nice and the Volta a Catalunya before claiming the Giro d’Italia, becoming only the eighth male rider in history to complete victories in all three Grand Tours.

His season had been built around an ambitious Giro and Tour de France double. Vingegaard arrived at the Tour as Tadej Pogačar’s principal challenger, but was 4:30 behind the Slovenian in second place overall when his crash brought his race to a premature end.

The focus will now remain firmly on 2027.

Vingegaard has already suggested he could explore new objectives next season, with the Tour de Romandie and Tour de Suisse among the most obvious additions to his programme. Having won five of cycling’s seven major week long stage races, those two Swiss events are the only ones still missing from his palmarès.

His full 2027 programme is expected to become clearer during the winter.
