'We have big plans with him' – Matteo Jorgenson signs long-term Visma deal

The American has impressed since arriving at Visma | Lease a Bike last season. Ahead of the Tour de France, the team has announced that Jorgenson will remain in situ until the end of the 2029 season.

Matteo Jorgenson has signed a contract extension that will keep him at Visma | Lease a Bike until the end of the 2029 season. The American arrived from Movistar at the beginning of 2024, and he quickly established himself as a mainstay of both the Classics unit and the Tour de France squad.

“I felt at home here straight away and I don’t see any other team where I can work with the same trust and calmness as I do here,” Jorgenson said in a statement released by the team on Tuesday.

Jorgenson will again line up in a key role at the Tour de France, where he is expected to be Jonas Vingegaard’s last man in the mountains. Twelve months ago, Jorgenson performed strongly in support of Vingegaard while helping himself to eighth place overall.

In a recent interview with Domestique, Visma | Lease a Bike head of performance Mathieu Heijboer indicated that Jorgenson would again play a key strategic role at the Tour. “We want to keep him in GC. He’s very dangerous there,” Heijboer said.

Jorgenson has enjoyed a fine 2025 campaign to date, winning Paris-Nice for the second successive year and then riding on behalf of Wout van Aert at the cobbled Classics.

“Winning Paris-Nice twice was something I never thought was possible before I joined this team,” Jorgenson said. “It has changed my goals and ambitions and allowed me to dream bigger.”

Midway through his final season at Movistar in 2023, Jorgenson detailed on social media how he “had spent every penny of [his] salary so far this year” on self-improvement, including funding his own training camps and hiring a nutritionist. His meticulous approach has apparently chimed with his current team.

“The mentality within the team matches mine, and so does the way of working,” Jorgenson said. “For a rider like me, who pays a lot of attention to small details, it’s really important to work in an environment where you can trust everyone around you.

“They look at the details even more closely than I ever could, which allows me to focus fully on my job: training and racing.”

Jorgenson described signing an extension with Visma as “an easy decision,” and the thought was echoed by head of racing Grischa Niermann.

“Even though he was still under contract, it was our priority to secure Matteo for the long term,” Niermann said. “Matteo is a very important rider for us in both the Grand Tours and the Classics. We have big plans with him, and we’re happy he has committed his future to us.”
