Will we ever see Jonas Vingegaard at the Worlds again? - Danish national coach sees a possibility in 2027

The route for the 2027 UCI World Championships in Sallanches, France, was revealed recently in Montreal and it is a course built for the climbers and so perfect for a rider like Jonas Vingegaard.

The men's elite face 20 laps of a demanding course that features 5700 metres of elevation gain during 265 kilometres.

According to the Danish national coach Michael Mørkøv, Vingegaard could contest a one-day championship for the first time since the 2025 European Championships, where he failed to finish.

“I haven’t spoken to Jonas about it, other than to say that he, like me, knows there’s a World Championships next year in Sallanches, which may well turn out to be the World Championships of this decade best suited to climbers and to a rider like Jonas,” Mørkøv told Feltet.

Vingegaard has not competed in the World Championships since 2018, when he raced in the U23 category on a climbers' parcours in Innsbruck, Austria.

Vingegaard and Mørkøv perhaps know that the Dane will not have a chance of success in subsequent flat World Championships in Abu Dhabi and Denmark.

"My very clear impression, just as it has been this year, is that Jonas is very keen to ride for the national team and is very keen to compete in the World Championships, but that this must, of course, fit in with his other commitments," Mørkøv explained.

Vingegaard's 'other commitments' are the Grand Tours for his trade team Visma | Lease a Bike, with glory at the Tour de France for a third time still a huge goal for the years to come.
