Women’s peloton left battered after crash-filled Tour of Flanders
Marlen Reusser and Kim Le Court saw their Ronde dreams end in an instant when a mass pile-up brought chaos to the run-in to the Koppenberg with just over 40 kilometres remaining.

Marlen Reusser and Kim Le Court were both involved in a major crash on the approach to the Koppenberg with just over 40km to go, and it was immediately clear that neither of the two could continue.
Reusser had arrived at the Tour of Flanders on the crest of a wave after winning Dwars door Vlaanderen on Wednesday, while Le Court was expected to feature for AG Insurance Soudal Quick-Step when the race hit the decisive moments. The pile-up in the nervous jostling for position ahead of the Koppenberg put paid to both of their ambitions.
Movistar confirmed the extent of Reusser's injuries after the race.
"Marlen has a fracture of a lumbar vertebra, which will be treated conservatively. She will remain in hospital for observation," the Spanish team said.
The news from AG Insurance Soudal Quick-Step was similarly concerning.
"After medical examination, it has been confirmed that Kim sustained a wrist fracture requiring surgery. She will now be further treated at AZ Herentals, where the operation is expected to take place within a few days," the team stated.
"Kim will be closely monitored and supported by the medical team during her recovery. The team also wishes to express its sincere gratitude to all medical staff and first responders for the immediate care and support Kim received after the accident."
The carnage was not limited to the Koppenberg approach. Victoire Berteau was an earlier casualty for Cofidis, going down with more than 80km still to race.
"Following a crash at just over 80km from the finish, Victoire Berteau sustained a broken radius. How long her recovery will take is yet to be confirmed," Cofidis reported.
Lorena Wiebes was another notable non-finisher after a particularly luckless afternoon in the saddle.
"Lorena was involved in two crashes. The Dutch champion did not finish the race, but aside from scrapes and bruises, she is doing well," SD Worx-Protime said.
