Wout van Aert has launched his own mobile phone service, offering supporters a choice between a standard subscription and a premium package with exclusive cycling content.

The Visma Lease a Bike rider announced WVA Mobile on Monday after teasing a major announcement earlier in the week. The service has been developed with Belgian telecom provider Telenet and will operate on its network.

Two subscription plans will be available. The Sprint package is a regular mobile plan, while the more expensive Monument option will include access to behind the scenes footage, virtual rides and events for subscribers.

Van Aert said the main aim of the project was to create a closer connection with his supporters.

“I wanted to make something that brings me closer to the fans, to my world and to the sport,” he said in the launch video.

The Belgian initially had doubts about the idea, but said the community aspect convinced him.

“At first I wondered who would be interested in a network where they simply see my name or initials on their phone,” Van Aert told Het Nieuwsblad. “But the idea is to build a community.”

Subscribers to the Monument plan are expected to receive the first exclusive content during the Vuelta a España. Van Aert said the material must offer genuine value to supporters who pay for access.

“If people are paying to become a member, the content has to be good,” he said.

The 31-year-old believes the concept may have originated in the United States and said he was not aware of another professional cyclist who had launched a similar mobile service.
