Biography of pro cyclist Cian Uijtdebroeks
Few young riders have arrived in the WorldTour with as much expectation as Cian Uijtdebroeks. Often compared to fellow Belgian Remco Evenepoel, he has been marked out as a future Grand Tour contender almost from the moment he turned professional.
His career so far has been a story of dazzling talent navigating injury setbacks and high-profile team changes, a rider still assembling the consistency to match his obvious ceiling.
Early life and rise
Uijtdebroeks grew up in the French-speaking part of Belgium and committed to cycling early, quickly standing out in the junior and under-23 ranks. His defining amateur result came in 2022, when at just 19 he became the youngest-ever winner of the Tour de l'Avenir, the most important stage race for young climbers and a traditional proving ground for future Grand Tour stars.
That performance accelerated his path to the top level. He turned professional with Bora–Hansgrohe, and after a contract dispute moved to Visma | Lease a Bike on 1 January 2024.
Grand Tour breakthrough at the Vuelta and Giro
Uijtdebroeks made his Grand Tour debut at the 2023 Vuelta a España and immediately delivered, finishing eighth overall and second in the best young rider classification. It was a remarkable result for a teenager in his first three-week race.
In 2024 he stepped up again at the Giro d'Italia, riding into the white jersey of best young rider and sitting inside the overall top placings before illness forced him to abandon. The flashes were unmistakable: he could climb with the best and hold his own in the mountains over three weeks.
A turbulent 2025 and the move to Movistar
The 2025 season showed both sides of Uijtdebroeks. He claimed his first professional victories with the queen stage and the overall title at the Tour de l'Ain in August, and added solid placings including a top-ten in his first Il Lombardia. But recurring back problems disrupted his year, forcing him out of Tirreno–Adriatico and into a layoff of more than three months.
In October 2025 he ended his Visma contract early to sign for Movistar Team through 2029. The motivation was clear: he wanted guaranteed Grand Tour leadership, and Movistar offered him exactly that, lining him up to lead their 2026 Tour de France ambitions.
Rider profile: strengths, style, and characteristics
Uijtdebroeks is a classic modern GC climber, light, explosive on steep gradients and capable of defending a position over three weeks. He time-trials competently for a pure climber, which is what gives him genuine general-classification upside rather than a stage-hunting profile. His main question marks have been durability and health rather than ability.
Personal life
Uijtdebroeks has spoken openly about the mental side of the sport, emphasising the importance of simply enjoying riding his bike after a stretch of intense pressure and team upheaval. He has cultivated a reputation as a thoughtful, self-aware athlete who is unafraid to make bold career decisions in pursuit of his goals.
