Biography of pro cyclist Demi Vollering

Demi Vollering has emerged as the dominant force in women’s cycling, combining explosive climbing, improved time trialling and tactical maturity to win the sport’s biggest races. The Dutch rider’s all-round brilliance has made her a Tour de France Femmes champion, a two-time Vuelta winner and a triple Ardennes queen. With her fierce racing style and growing leadership role, Vollering is now the rider everyone watches - and often chases - on the world stage.

Early life and rise

Born in 1996 in Pijnacker, the Netherlands, Vollering didn’t grow up in a cycling academy system. She started as a speed skater, trained as a florist, and only took up cycling competitively in her late teens. Her breakthrough came in 2018 with the SwaboLadies development team, earning a pro contract at Parkhotel Valkenburg for 2019.

That rookie season brought immediate success: she podiumed in Liège–Bastogne–Liège, won Giro dell’Emilia, and showed promise as a punchy climber. It was clear Vollering had the engine and mentality for the top. In 2021, she joined Team SD Worx, cycling’s dominant women’s team, and her rise accelerated.

Breakthrough and monument win

Vollering’s true breakout came in 2021. She won Liège–Bastogne–Liège in a sprint against Van Vleuten, Longo Borghini and Niewiadoma. Weeks later, she claimed La Course by Le Tour. That summer, she podiumed at the Giro Rosa (3rd) and won her first WorldTour stage race at the Women’s Tour of Britain, including a decisive time trial win.

Under the guidance of Anna van der Breggen, she developed from an aggressive climber into a consistent GC contender. By 2022, Vollering was SD Worx’s new leader and ready to take on the world.

Tour de France Femmes

In 2022, Vollering finished second overall in the inaugural Tour de France Femmes, beaten only by Van Vleuten’s long-range mountain raids. But she won the mountains classification and laid the groundwork for her Tour ambitions.

In 2023, she returned stronger and conquered. After biding her time, Vollering dropped her rivals on the Col du Tourmalet, winning the queen stage and taking yellow. She sealed overall victory the next day with a strong time trial, delivering the Tour de France Femmes title for the Netherlands.

The 2024 edition brought heartbreak. After winning the opening time trial, a crash cost her time. She launched a huge comeback on Alpe d’Huez, winning the final stage, but lost the overall by just four seconds to Kasia Niewiadoma - the closest margin in Tour history.

Beyond the Tour, Vollering has been dominant in week-long races. She won La Vuelta Femenina in 2024 and 2025, avenging her narrow loss to Van Vleuten in 2023. She’s a three-time winner of Itzulia Women (2022, 2024, 2025), and also claimed GC wins at Tour de Romandie, Vuelta a Burgos, and Tour de Suisse.

In 2023, she swept the Ardennes Triple - winning Amstel Gold, Flèche Wallonne, and Liège–Bastogne–Liège – joining Van der Breggen as the only rider to do so. She also won Strade Bianche in 2023 and 2025, and consistently places on podiums in hilly one-day races.

Rivalries

Her rivalry with Annemiek van Vleuten defined her early peak. In 2022, Van Vleuten had the edge. By 2023, Vollering had taken over. In 2024, Kasia Niewiadoma emerged as her main GC rival, beating her at the Tour by mere seconds. Another storyline has been her teammate-turned-rival Lotte Kopecky, with whom she shared Tour podiums, but also battled for team leadership in classics and worlds.

Personal life

Vollering is engaged to Jan de Voogd, her longtime partner and manager. A trained florist, she still enjoys gardening and spending time outdoors. Known for her optimism and discipline, she splits her time between the Netherlands and Switzerland.

She is deeply connected to her roots and often speaks about inspiring young girls to pursue dreams in sport. Her slogan - “It starts with dreaming” - reflects her journey from part-time worker to global cycling star.

Salary and sponsors

By 2024, Vollering had become one of the highest-paid cyclists in the women’s peloton. She reportedly turned down a €1 million offer from UAE Team ADQ, and instead signed a high-profile deal with FDJ–Suez for 2025–2026.

She has personal endorsements with Nike, Polestar and Maurten, and brought Specialized bikes and Nike apparel to FDJ–Suez. As of 2025, she is not only a champion on the road, but also a valuable commercial figure in global cycling.
