Biography of pro cyclist Felix Gall
Felix Gall is the rare climber who blends explosive uphill acceleration with the steady diesel needed for three-week racing. He matters because he has carried Austrian cycling back into the Grand Tour conversation, emerging as a credible top-five contender at the sport's biggest races.
After a patient development, Gall has grown from breakaway specialist into a protected GC leader, building his season around the high mountains of the Giro, Tour and Vuelta.
Early life and rise
Gall grew up in Nußdorf-Debant in the Tyrolean mountains, trying climbing, tennis, skiing and taekwondo before friends drew him toward cycling through triathlon. The mountainous terrain of his home region proved the ideal training ground for a future climber.
His talent was obvious early. In 2015 he won the Austrian junior road race title and then the junior road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Richmond, Virginia. He added the Austrian under-23 title in 2018 and his first elite stage-race overall at the Istrian Spring Trophy in 2019, turning professional with Team DSM before moving to AG2R Citroën (now Decathlon CMA CGM) for 2022.
2023 Tour de France stage win and its impact
Gall's defining day came on stage 17 of the 2023 Tour de France. He attacked from the breakaway on the brutal slopes of the Col de la Loze, collecting the Souvenir Henri Desgrange before soloing to a memorable victory in Courchevel. The win, the biggest of his career, confirmed his arrival as a top-tier climber and reshaped his ambitions around the general classification.
Grand Tour GC contender: 2025-2026
Gall has translated that breakthrough into sustained GC results. He was a standout climber at the 2025 Tour de France, riding strongly at Mûr-de-Bretagne and through the Pyrenees and Alps, including top finishes at the Col de la Loze and La Plagne, to finish 5th overall, a career best. He backed it with 2nd overall at the Tour de Suisse and 8th at the Vuelta a España. In 2026 he earned his first Grand Tour podium, finishing 2nd overall at the Giro d'Italia behind Jonas Vingegaard, consistently the strongest climber in the race despite losing time in the lone time trial.
Rider profile: strengths and style
Gall is a pure climber whose strength lies in repeated high-mountain efforts rather than a single explosive jump. He climbs at a relentless, grinding tempo that wears down rivals over long ascents, and he has improved his consistency across three weeks. His clear weakness remains the time trial, where he typically concedes ground that he must claw back in the mountains.
Personal life
Gall hails from a small Tyrolean town and retains close ties to the Austrian mountains that shaped him. A multi-sport child, he is known within the peloton for a measured, hard-working temperament rather than flamboyance.
