Biography of pro cyclist Florian Vermeersch
Florian Vermeersch is a big, powerful Classics specialist whose career has been defined by versatility. Equally at home on the cobbles of northern France and the gravel roads of the world championships, he combines raw strength with the endurance to last the distance in races of attrition.
He matters because he is exactly the kind of all-terrain engine modern teams prize: a rider who can protect a leader for hours, then contend for the win himself when the race breaks apart.
Early life and rise in Belgium
Vermeersch came through the Belgian development system, a country that breeds cobbled-Classics riders like no other. He turned professional with Lotto, where his size and power quickly marked him out as a Classics prospect, and he made an immediate impression on the international stage.
His breakthrough came faster than anyone expected, and it came on cycling's most brutal one-day stage.
The 2021 Paris-Roubaix podium
In 2021, in only his first full professional season, Vermeersch finished second at Paris-Roubaix. After a wet, chaotic edition of the Hell of the North, he reached the Roubaix velodrome in a three-man group and was beaten only by Sonny Colbrelli, holding off none other than Mathieu van der Poel for the podium. It was a stunning result for such a young rider and established him overnight as a genuine cobbled-Classics talent.
UAE move and the 2025 Gravel World title
Vermeersch later joined UAE Team Emirates, where he has continued to be a force in the cobbled Classics, including a fifth-place finish at Paris-Roubaix. In 2025 he added the biggest one-day title of his career off-road, winning the UCI Gravel World Championships, succeeding Mathieu van der Poel as world champion after finishing second in the discipline the year before. Happy with his progress at UAE, he has extended his contract with the team through 2029.
Rider profile: strengths, style, and characteristics
Vermeersch is a powerhouse built for hard, attritional racing. His strengths are raw power, endurance and the ability to stay upright and strong over the worst terrain, whether that's the cobbles of Roubaix or the gravel of a world championship course. He is a versatile rider who can ride for a team leader or take his own chances, and his time-trialling ability adds another dimension to his racing.
Personal life
A proud product of Belgian cycling culture, Vermeersch has spoken about his belief that there is much more still to achieve in his career. He remains one of the more grounded figures in the WorldTour, focused on building steadily on the promise of that early Roubaix podium.
