It was an agonising result but it marked him out as a genuine Grand Tour contender.
Hindley moved to BORA–hansgrohe for 2022 and returned to the Giro as an outside favourite. He won a brutal mountain stage to Blockhaus, then launched a decisive attack on the penultimate stage over the Passo Fedaia to seize the pink jersey with only the final time trial remaining. In 2023 Hindley made his mark on the Tour de France.
