Biography of pro cyclist Jai Hindley
Jai Hindley is an Australian climber and Grand Tour specialist whose career has been defined by resilience as much as raw ability. From a heartbreaking near-miss at the 2020 Giro to the triumph of 2022, his story is one of patience rewarded.
He matters because he belongs to a small group of riders who have actually won a three-week Grand Tour, in an era dominated by a handful of superstars, he has repeatedly shown he can still climb onto the podium of the biggest races in the world.
Early life and rise in Australia
Hindley was born and raised in Perth, on Australia's west coast, and started cycling young, racing bikes from the age of six. He came up through the Australian development pathway and built his reputation as a climber on the European calendar.
His 2020 season was the breakthrough. He won the Herald Sun Tour overall, dominating the mountaintop finishes at Falls Creek and Mount Buller, before announcing himself on the world stage at that year's Giro d'Italia.
2020 & 2022 Giro d'Italia
At the 2020 Giro, Hindley rode into contention in the final week and took the race lead on the penultimate mountain stage, dropping the GC favourites to move into the maglia rosa. He went into the closing individual time trial level on time with Tao Geoghegan Hart but lost the title against the clock, finishing second overall. It was an agonising result but it marked him out as a genuine Grand Tour contender.
Hindley moved to BORA–hansgrohe for 2022 and returned to the Giro as an outside favourite. He won a brutal mountain stage to Blockhaus, then launched a decisive attack on the penultimate stage over the Passo Fedaia to seize the pink jersey with only the final time trial remaining. This time he held on, sealing the overall victory and becoming the first Australian ever to win the Giro d'Italia. It remains the defining result of his career.
2023 Tour de France: yellow at last
In 2023 Hindley made his mark on the Tour de France. He won stage 5 to Laruns with a long-range solo move, holding off Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar, and pulled on the yellow jersey for the first time. He went on to finish seventh overall in Paris, confirming his versatility across all three Grand Tours.
Rider profile: strengths, style, and characteristics
Hindley is a climber first and foremost, strongest on long, high-altitude ascents where his diesel-like steadiness and ability to absorb repeated attacks come into their own. He is a capable, if not explosive, time triallist. Strong enough to defend a lead but rarely to build one. His real weapon is durability across three weeks: he often peaks late in a Grand Tour, when rivals fade. Tactically patient, he rides to a plan and rarely panics.
Rivalries
As a Grand Tour podium contender, Hindley has repeatedly measured himself against the dominant figures of his generation, Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard, most memorably outfoxing both on the road to Laruns in 2023. His 2020 Giro duel with Tao Geoghegan Hart, decided by the narrowest of margins in the final time trial, remains one of the closest finishes in modern Grand Tour history.
Personal life
Hindley hails from Perth and remains closely tied to the Australian cycling community, racing the national championships at home when his calendar allows. Away from the headlines he is known within the peloton as understated and level-headed, a quiet professional rather than a showman.

What's next for Jai Hindley?
After a 2025 season disrupted by a crash and abandon at the Giro, Hindley bounced back with fourth at the Vuelta and a third career Giro podium in 2026, proof that, with Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe's full backing, he can still target the overall at a Grand Tour. Now in his thirties, he remains one of the most reliable climbers in the peloton and a podium threat whenever the race tilts into the high mountains.
