Biography of pro cyclist Jasper Philipsen

Jasper Philipsen has become one of the most dominant sprinters in modern cycling. With blistering acceleration and growing endurance, he has won stages in all three Grand Tours and made his mark in one-day classics. A green jersey winner at the Tour de France and victor at Milan–San Remo, Philipsen has risen from raw talent to more than one of world's best sprinters.

Early life and rise

Born in 1998 in Mol, Belgium, Philipsen started cycling after a BMX accident as a child. He developed through local clubs and became national junior time trial champion before joining Hagens Berman Axeon in 2018. That season, he won stages at the Baby Giro and Triptyque des Monts et Châteaux, leading to a WorldTour contract with UAE Team Emirates.

Breakthrough performances

In 2020, Philipsen claimed his first Grand Tour stage win at the Vuelta a España. His breakout continued in 2021 with wins at Scheldeprijs and two more Vuelta stages. But it was in 2022 at the Tour de France that he truly arrived, winning two stages including the Champs-Élysées. In 2023, he dominated the Tour with four stage wins and took the green jersey.

Major results and highlights

Philipsen has nine Tour de France stage wins, four from 2023 alone. That year, he was the most successful male rider in the peloton with 19 victories. In 2024, he claimed his first Monument with victory at Milan–San Remo, outsprinting rivals after surviving the Poggio. He has also podiumed at Paris–Roubaix and won Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne and Eschborn–Frankfurt.

Style and strengths

Philipsen is a powerful sprinter with a low, aerodynamic position and a devastating finishing kick. He’s also a smart wheel-surfer, using his positioning and timing to find the right opening. In recent seasons, he’s improved his climbing enough to survive tough classics and intermediate hills, making him dangerous beyond flat finishes.

Rivalries and team role

Early in his career, Philipsen shared sprint duties with Tim Merlier at Alpecin. Their internal rivalry ended when Merlier left for Quick-Step.. Now, Philipsen is Alpecin’s undisputed sprint leader, often with Mathieu van der Poel delivering the final lead-out and Merlier as hig biggest oponent.

Personal life

Philipsen is quiet and focused off the bike. He lives in Ham, Belgium with his partner Melanie and maintains close ties to his hometown. Though he races with intensity, he’s known as humble and respectful. He speaks fluent Dutch and English, and avoids the spotlight outside of racing.

Salary Jasper Philipsen

In 2024, Philipsen signed a four-year extension with Alpecin–Deceuninck through 2028, reportedly making him one of the highest-paid sprinters in cycling with a salary near €3 million per year.

Records and milestones

  • First Belgian rider since Tom Boonen to win the Tour de France points jersey.
  • First Belgian sprinter to win Milan San-Remo in decades.
  • Closing in on the Belgian record for Tour stage wins
  • Only Belgium active rider with Tour stage victories and a Monument to his name.

What's next for Jasper Philipsen?

Philipsen now targets more Monuments, particularly Paris–Roubaix and Flanders. He aims to win multiple green jerseys and could contend for a world title if the course suits. Still only 27, he’s in his prime and remains Belgium’s top sprint hope (together with Merlier) for the coming Tours.
