Biography of pro cyclist Jonathan Milan

Jonathan Milan has established himself as one of the most powerful sprinters in professional cycling – a fast-finishing specialist with roots on the track and a growing list of victories on the road. After emerging as a key lead-out man and occasional winner at Bahrain Victorious, the Italian rider took a major step forward with Lidl–Trek, where he has developed into a consistent stage winner and jersey contender in Grand Tours. Towering at 1.94m and with a background as an Olympic and world champion in team pursuit, Milan brings brute force, track sharpness and growing tactical intelligence to every finish line.

Early life and rise through the ranks

Born in 2000 in Buja, in Italy’s Friuli region, Jonathan Milan first made his mark as a junior on the track. He rose quickly through Italy’s national system, claiming multiple medals in team and individual pursuit. His breakthrough came in 2021 when he helped Italy win the gold medal in team pursuit at the Tokyo Olympics, setting a new world record in the process. The same year, he turned pro with Bahrain Victorious, skipping the usual under-23 WorldTour apprenticeship.

Grand Tour breakthrough: Giro d’Italia 2023–2024

Milan made his Giro debut in 2023 and immediately made headlines by winning stage 2 in a mass sprint. Over three weeks, he consistently finished in the top three, earning the maglia ciclamino (points jersey) at his first attempt. One year later, in 2024, he returned even stronger: three stage wins, four second places and a second consecutive points jersey confirmed his place among the world’s elite sprinters.

Tour de France green jersey (2025)

In 2025, Milan debuted at the Tour de France with Lidl–Trek and once again delivered. He claimed two stage wins, wore the green jersey from the Pyrenees to Paris, and became the first Italian since Alessandro Petacchi to win the points classification. It was a breakthrough that cemented his status as one of the most dominant fast men in the peloton.

Personal life

Despite his imposing frame, Milan is known as a calm and thoughtful presence in the peloton. Teammates describe him as loyal and focused. He splits his time between Italy and team training camps, and retains close ties to the Italian track program.

Jonathan Milan salary and contract

After his 2023 Giro breakout, Milan signed a long-term deal with Lidl–Trek, reportedly worth around €1 million per year. He is contracted through 2027, with the team viewing him as their marquee sprinter.

Records and milestones

  • First Italian to win the Tour de France green jersey since 2010
  • Back-to-back points jersey winner at the Giro d’Italia (2023, 2024)
  • Olympic gold medalist and world record holder in team pursuit (Tokyo 2020)

What’s next for Jonathan Milan?

Still only 24, Milan has already worn the sprinter’s jersey in both the Giro and the Tour. With his confidence growing and his lead-out improving, he’s aiming to add more Grand Tour stage wins and possibly target a Monument in the years ahead. For Italian cycling, he represents a new generation of speed and strength -and the promise of more to come.
