Biography of pro cyclist Lorena Wiebes
Lorena Wiebes has defined the modern era of women’s sprinting. Ruthless, efficient and almost impossible to beat in a clean run to the line, she has turned bunch finishes into something close to a science. By her mid twenties, she had already amassed one of the highest win totals in the peloton, combining raw speed with growing tactical maturity.
Early life and rise
Born in 1999 in Mijdrecht in the Netherlands, Wiebes did not initially focus on road cycling. She developed through the Dutch development system with a strong background on the track, where her explosive power became evident. That foundation translated quickly to the road.
Her breakthrough came early. In 2019, riding for Parkhotel Valkenburg, she won multiple races at WorldTour level, immediately establishing herself as one of the fastest riders in the sport. Unlike many sprinters who take years to refine positioning and timing, Wiebes seemed instinctive from the outset.
Sprint dominance
By 2020 and 2021, Wiebes had become the benchmark in flat finishes. She collected stage wins in the Giro d’Italia Donne, the Vuelta España Femenina, and other major races. Her move to Team DSM, and later SD Worx, placed her inside some of the strongest sprint structures in the peloton, further sharpening her edge.
She claimed multiple European Championship medals and consistently dominated smaller stage races, often winning several stages in a single week. What separated her was not only top speed but repeatability. She could sprint day after day and still deliver.

Wiebes’ palmarès includes victories at Gent-Wevelgem, Milan-San Remo and stages at the Tour de France Femmes, where she proved she could handle the pressure of the biggest spotlight. She has worn the points jerseys in several stage races and has frequently topped the annual win rankings.

Style and strengths
Wiebes is a pure sprinter with exceptional acceleration and high top speed. She excels in straightforward finishes but has also improved on technical urban circuits, where positioning and nerve are critical.
In recent seasons, she has expanded her range slightly, surviving hillier classics more consistently and improving her endurance over longer race days. While she is not a climber, she has worked to ensure she arrives fresher at the decisive moment.
Rivalries
Her duels with Elisa Balsamo and Charlotte Kool have defined many recent sprint showdowns. Each brings a different approach, but Wiebes’ consistency has often tipped the balance in her favour.
Personal life
Off the bike, Wiebes maintains a relatively private profile. Known for her calm demeanour, she rarely shows emotion in victory, preferring to let her results speak.
