Biography pro-cyclist Remco Evenepoel

Remco Evenepoel - nicknamed 'the Aerobullet from Schepdaal' - is one of the sport’s brightest and boldest talents. A former footballer turned cycling prodigy, the Belgian has already won a Grand Tour, two World Championships, Olympic golds in both the road race and time trial, and multiple Monuments before the age of 25. Known for his time trials, long solo attacks and aggressive style, Evenepoel races for Soudal–Quick-Step and continues to push for cycling’s biggest prizes.

Early life and switch from football to cycling

Evenepoel was born in Aalst in 2000 and raised in Schepdaal. He spent his youth in the football academies of Anderlecht and PSV and represented Belgium at youth level. In 2017, he quit football and focused on cycling, inspired by his father, ex-pro Patrick Evenepoel. Within a year, he had won both junior World Championships - road and time trial - and signed a pro contract with Soudal Quick-Step, skipping the U23 ranks entirely.

Breakthrough and early dominance

In 2019, aged just 19, Evenepoel won the Tour of Belgium, the Clásica San Sebastián and silver in the elite World Time Trial. In 2020, he won every stage race he entered before crashing badly at Il Lombardia. After months of recovery, he returned to form in 2022, winning Liège–Bastogne–Liège and dominating the Vuelta a España - becoming the first Belgian to win a Grand Tour in 44 years. That same year he won the World Championships road race in Wollongong.

Major wins and Tour breakthrough

Evenepoel defended his Liège title in 2023 and took three stages and the mountains jersey at the Vuelta. In 2024, he made his Tour de France debut and finished third overall behind Pogačar and Vingegaard, taking a memorable time trial stage win. That summer, he also became double Olympic champion in Paris, winning both the road race and time trial.

Rivalries and racing style

Evenepoel's duels with Pogačar and Vingegaard are defining a new era in stage racing. Known for bold, sometimes unpredictable attacks and meticulous preparation, Evenepoel blends aero efficiency with climbing grit. Critics once questioned his tactical maturity, but he has matured into a consistent GC rider with leadership status.

Partner and personal life

Evenepoel married his partner Oumaïma Rayane (nickname "Oumi") in 2022. He trains mainly in Spain, speaks three languages, and is seen as focused yet grounded. His double Olympic golds and Tour podium made him a national hero in Belgium, with a strong and growing international fanbase.

What is the salary of Remco Evenepoel?

Evenepoel is under contract with Soudal–Quick-Step through 2026 and earns an estimated €5 million annually. Remco Evenepoel has several personal sponsors in addition to his team sponsorship with Soudal Quick-Step. These include Castelli for cycling apparel, Renson for ventilation and sun protection, and Safety Jogger for safety shoes. He also has a clothing brand and community called R.EV, which is focused on connecting with his fans and followers.
