Yellow cards in cycling

Since 2024, the UCI has introduced a yellow card system to address dangerous or unsporting behaviour in the peloton. It’s a formal warning, not unlike what we know from football, aimed at improving safety and setting clearer boundaries for what’s acceptable in the heat of the race.

Riders can receive a yellow card for irregular sprinting, pushing, obstruction, or ignoring race protocols. The card itself doesn’t affect race results, but it does stay on record. Repeated offences come with consequences:

  • 2 yellow cards during a one-day race or stage race | Disqualification and 7-day suspension
  • 3 yellow cards within 30 days | 14-day suspension
  • 6 yellow cards within a 12-month period | 30-day suspension

Below is an overview of yellow cards that have been issued.
