European Championships Road Race Women
The elite women’s road race decides the European champion in one of the most important one day races on the continental calendar. Riders represent their national teams rather than their usual trade teams, with the winner earning the distinctive European champion’s jersey for the following season. With a different host and course each year, the race can suit anything from pure sprinters to climbers and attacking specialists.
When was the European Championship Women's Road Race first held?
The elite women’s road race at the UEC Road European Championships was first held in Plumelec, France, in 2016. Anna van der Breggen became the inaugural elite European champion, beating Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma and Italy’s Elisa Longo Borghini in the sprint.
Who has won the most European Championship Women's Road Race titles?
Lorena Wiebes and Demi Vollering share the record with two victories. The Dutch sprinter became European champion in 2022 in Munich and claimed the title again in 2024. Vollering took the win in 2025 in France and 2026 in Slovenia.
What makes the European Championship Women's Road Race unique?
Like the World Championships, the European Championships are raced in national colours rather than trade team jerseys. That creates a different tactical dynamic, with riders who are normally teammates sometimes becoming rivals and regular competitors suddenly working together.
The changing host location also gives every edition its own identity. Some courses favour fast finishes, while others create opportunities for climbers, classics specialists or breakaway riders. The winner wears the European champion’s jersey in road races for the following year, making the title visible throughout the season.
