The Volta ao Algarve is a multi-day stage race held in the Algarve region in southern Portugal. First run in 1960 and 1961, the event disappeared from the calendar before returning on a permanent basis in 1977. In its early years, from 1977 to 1983, the race was reserved for amateur riders, before evolving into a key early season fixture for professional teams. In 2020, the Volta ao Algarve stepped up to the UCI ProSeries, underlining its growing status on the international calendar.
