Stage 16 Vuelta a España 2025

09.09

Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) took his first Grand Tour stage win in over four years, sprinting past Mikel Landa on stage 16 of the Vuelta a España. The finish was moved 8km earlier after pro-Palestine protests forced organisers to cut the final climb to Mos. Castro de Herville. The red jersey group arrived together, with all main contenders except Felix Gall finishing safely.

What we said beforehand

Stage 16 starts the final week with four categorised climbs and a summit finish. After a rolling but uncategorised opening 70km from Poio, the Alto de Groba marks the start of a tougher second half. The final ascent of Alto Castro de Herville could inspire GC action or reward the breakaway, as seen in 2021 when Clément Champoussin seized a chaotic victory while Miguel Ángel López lost his podium place and abandoned the race.
