Caruso takes breakaway glory at the Vuelta Burgos

Stage 4 of the 2025 Vuelta a Burgos took the riders from Doña Santos to Regumiel de la Sierra over a rolling 162.7 kilometres. The route featured a succession of short climbs, with two category 3 ascents in the final third, the last cresting just 10 kilometres from the finish.

After the queen stage of the 2025 edition on stage 3, the GC was shaken up with Léo Bisiaux (Decathlon AG2R) moving into the race lead and a significant number of riders dropping out of GC contention. That meant a strong breakaway stood a real chance of victory on stage 4.

Right from the start, a group of seven riders went clear of the peloton: Ben Zwiehoff (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Rui Costa (EF Education-EasyPost), Javier Romo (Movistar), Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious), Nickolas Zukowsky (Q36.5) and Larry Warbasse (Tudor).

The breakaway quickly built a healthy advantage, with the gap stretching beyond 3 minutes 30 seconds and holding steady for most of the stage as the peloton was content to let them fight for the stage win.

On the day’s final climb, the Alto del Cargadero (7.6 km at 2.9%), the group split. Caruso attacked at the foot of the climb and was briefly joined by Zwiehoff, but the German could not match the Italian’s pace. Caruso went solo with 15 kilometres remaining and extended his lead to 1 minute 20 seconds in the closing kilometres.

He held on to take the glory in Regumiel de la Sierra, claiming his first victory in over three years, his last having come at the 2022 Tour of Sicily.
