Emotional Tom Pidcock storms to second MTB world title and dedicates victory to Finlay Tarling

Both Pidcock and Mathieu van der Poel started well down the grid because of their mountain bike rankings, leaving them with a major task from the opening lap. While Van der Poel struggled to make significant progress, Pidcock quickly began cutting his way through the field.

At the front, Adrien Boichis was among the riders setting the early pace. A leading group formed around Boichis, Luca Martin, Mathis Azzaro, Martín Vidaurre, Charlie Aldridge, Simone Avondetto and Dario Lillo, while Pidcock and Van der Poel were still chasing behind.

Pidcock continued to gain positions and eventually reached the leaders during the third lap.

His progress was not entirely straightforward. An acceleration from Aldridge briefly put Pidcock under pressure, but the Brit refused to panic and soon returned to the front as Martin, Azzaro and Lillo began to lose ground.

Pidcock later revealed that he had been riding through discomfort after crashing during course reconnaissance on Friday.

“You really have to ride at your limit on this course to move forward,” Pidcock said after the finish. He explained that his back had already started troubling him on the opening lap and that he had little room to increase the pace.

Even so, the tempo proved enough to bring him back into contention.

Once Pidcock reached the front, the race changed quickly. Boichis, Punchard, Vidaurre and Aldridge were still involved when Pidcock began applying more pressure on the climbs. Boichis eventually lost contact, followed by Vidaurre, leaving Aldridge as the strongest remaining challenger.

Aldridge initially responded to Pidcock's accelerations, but the defending Olympic champion continued to push. With two laps remaining he committed fully to the attack and eventually opened the decisive gap.

“In the final two laps I just gave everything to see if I could build an advantage,” Pidcock said. “It was a really hard race.”

By the start of the final lap, Pidcock had established enough of a margin to control the race. He crossed the line alone to claim the rainbow jersey, adding the 2026 title to his first elite mountain bike world championship victory in 2023.

Aldridge secured silver to complete a British one two, while Canada's Punchard took bronze.

Van der Poel experienced a very different afternoon. After initially gaining several positions, the Dutchman was unable to follow Pidcock's path towards the front. His deficit continued to increase and he eventually finished 30th, 4 minutes and 40 seconds behind the winner.

It means the mountain bike rainbow jersey remains the major missing world title in Van der Poel's collection, having already become world champion on the road, in cyclocross and on gravel.

For Pidcock, however, the emotion of the victory went far beyond another title.

“I don't have many words,” he said after the finish before dedicating the victory to Finlay Tarling, his brother Josh and the Tarling family.

Pidcock also spoke about seeing Josh Tarling start the Vuelta a España during what has been an extremely difficult period for the family, describing it as an incredible moment.

Despite reclaiming the rainbow jersey, opportunities to see Pidcock race in it could initially be limited. He said his focus will remain largely on road racing next season before mountain biking becomes a bigger part of his programme again.
