Evenepoel and Vingegaard light up Catalunya stage before late crash hands win to Godon

Stage 3 of the Volta a Catalunya turned into a chaotic affair, with crosswinds, splits and a late crash shaping the outcome. In the end, Dorian Godon sprinted to his second victory of the race after the day’s decisive move fell apart inside the final kilometre.

The stage opened with a six rider breakaway featuring, once again, mountain classification leader Baptiste Veistroffer. The Frenchman picked up more points on the early climbs, but the peloton never allowed the move much freedom and brought it back after the final ascent.

From there, the race ignited in the wind. With around 30 kilometres to go, the peloton split into echelons as teams forced the pace. Several riders were caught out, while a reduced front group pushed on towards the finish.

Out of that chaos, Remco Evenepoel accelerated clear. Only Jonas Vingegaard was able to follow, and the two quickly opened a small gap. Evenepoel set the tempo on the front, urging his rival to contribute as they tried to stay away.

The gap hovered around a handful of seconds, never quite enough to feel secure. Still, the pair entered the final kilometre with a narrow advantage and a shot at the stage.

That changed in an instant. Approaching a roundabout, Evenepoel went down, ending the move on the spot. Vingegaard continued briefly but sat up as the peloton swept past in the closing metres.

The stage was decided in a sprint, where Godon proved the fastest once more.

Earlier in the day, Jay Vine had abandoned the race after a crash, adding another layer of misfortune to an already unpredictable stage.

Tomorrow brings the first real mountain test, with a summit finish at Vallter at over 2,100 metres altitude, where an 11.4 kilometre climb at 7.6 percent will decide the outcome.
