Fabio Jakobsen’s spate of ill fortune continues. The Dutchman’s season was interrupted by iliac artery surgery, and he now faces another spell on the side lines after breaking his collarbone in a crash on stage 3 of the Renewi Tour on Friday.

Jakobsen was a faller early on the stage to Geraardsbergen, and his Picnic-PostNL team confirmed on Saturday that he had broken his collarbone in the incident. He underwent surgery on Friday evening.

“I was really enjoying being back with the team on the road and doing what I enjoy the most – racing my bike,” Jakobsen said in a statement from the team.

“This is of course a setback, but hopefully I can be back training soon and from there we will make a plan for any upcoming races.”

Jakobsen is in his second season at Picnic-PostNL after joining from Soudal-QuickStep at the start of 2024. The 28-year-old paused his season after the Classic Brugge-De Panne in order to undergo surgery to rectify an iliac artery issue. He returned to action at the recent Tour of Denmark.

“Fabio’s return to racing was going well and he was making the steps that we expected,” said team doctor Camiel Aldershof. “However, he crashed pretty hard during yesterday’s Renewi Tour stage and unfortunately broke his collarbone.

“He underwent surgery last night, which went well, and will now focus on his recovery in the next few days, before we then look to a plan for him to get back to full training.”
