A 42km race against the clock from Viareggio to Massa was always likely to shake up the GC picture, and stage 10 lived up to its billing.

Filippo Ganna (Netcompany-Ineos) blasted to time trial victory on stage 10 of the Giro d’Italia in Massa, as Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike) edged closer to Afonso Eulálio’s (Bahrain-Victorious) maglia rosa.

The Italian champion was the outright favourite for victory and powered around the 42km course in 45:53 with an average speed of 54.9km/h.

In the end, Ganna was in a league of his own, finishing 1:54 ahead of his teammate Thymen Arensman in second and 1:59 over Rémi Cavagna (Groupama-FDJ United) in third.

This marks Ganna’s eighth Giro stage victory, seven of which have come in the time trial discipline.

Meanwhile, Vingegaard moved closer in the overall standings to Eulálio. The Dane finished 13th on the stage, 3:00 behind Ganna, while the maglia rosa ended 41st, 4:57 behind the stage winner.

Arensman was the biggest winner in the GC battle, moving into third overall, making it a very successful day for the British team.

How it unfolded

Max Walscheid (Lidl-Trek) was one of the first riders off the start ramp, and the German set the early benchmark of 48:10. The German would eventually be toppled by Sjoerd Bax (Pinarello-Q36.5), who upset the apple cart, posting a time that was 0:13 quicker than Walscheid.

Filippo Ganna (Netcompany-Ineos) delivered on his pre-favourite tag, with the Italian champion rocketing around the 42km course in a time of 45:53 seconds, 2:04 quicker than Bax’s benchmark.

Rémi Cavagna (Groupama-FDJ United) was first rider to go within two minutes of Ganna, posting the second fastest time, 1:59 behind the Italian.

With the GC contenders up and running, Thymen Arensman (Netcompany-Ineos) was the quickest through the first check, 0:30 behind Ganna. Ben O’Connor (Jayco AlUla) was the next best placed, at 0:47, while Vingegaard was next at 0:56 in tenth. Eulálio was in 38th, 0:50 behind Vingegaard at the first check.

Arensman continued to thrive, going third through the second check at 1:10, while Derek Gee-West edged one second ahead of O’Connor among the best placed GC contenders at 1:35. Vingegaard was 11th through the second check at 1:43 and extended his advantage over Eulálio to 1:29, but the Dane was behind Arensman, Gee-West and O’Connor.

In the end, Ganna would win by a significant margin; meanwhile, Arensman was second on the stage, 1:54 behind his teammate. Gee-West (2:16), O’Connor (2:42) and Vingegaard (3:00) were the best of the rest of the GC contenders, with the Dane moving closer to the maglia rosa.
