Guerreiro denies alleged whereabouts issue was behind Movistar exit

Ruben Guerreiro has denied that a report that an alleged failure to inform anti-doping authorities of his whereabouts was behind his departure from Movistar at the end of 2025.

AS reported on Sunday stated that Guerreiro had “failed to report a trip during this past season to ADAMS (Anti-Doping Administration System),” and the newspaper claimed that the incident had led to an “irreconcilable rift” between the rider and Movistar.

Former Movistar rider Vinicius Rangel is currently serving a two-year ban after recording three whereabouts failures in a twelve-month period.

Speaking to Portuguese publication Topcycling, Guerreiro rejected the AS report, insisting that he had no whereabouts strike against his name.

“I even checked the calendar to see if it was April Fool’s Day,” Guerreiro said. “I have no issues with whereabouts, I didn’t commit any illegality, I’ve never even received a missed test warning. It’s normal to make a small mistake sometimes, but I’ve never had any problem.

“I don’t understand the basis of the story. In these 11 years as a professional, the people with me know I’ve always been transparent, dedicated to work and ethical.”

Guerreiro joined Movistar at the beginning of 2023 after a three-year stint at EF that had seen him score a stage victory at Roccaraso on the 2020 Giro d’Italia and win the Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenge in 2022.

He began his tenure at Movistar with overall victory at the Saudi Tour and a strong showing at O Gran Camiño, but he ran into repeated injury problems thereafter, including a hernia issue. He didn’t ride a Grand Tour in either of his final two seasons at Movistar, and his contract was not renewed at the end of 2025.

The 31-year-old is without a team for 2026, and he confessed that injuries had limited his training primarily to gym work in recent months.

“My focus now is the gym and physiotherapy, and a bit of cycling as far as my body allows. I’m not going to fool anyone when I can’t perform my job,” Guerreiro told Topcycling. “I haven’t committed to anyone yet because I’m not fit to compete, but I’m working on my recovery.”
