Major blow for Decathlon CMA CGM as Tiesj Benoot misses Classics

Tiesj Benoot will not race the 2026 spring classics after suffering a back injury during his winter build-up, forcing him to undergo surgery. The 31-year-old Belgian had been signed as a key classics leader by Decathlon CMA CGM, but his new team must now rethink its plans without him.

Decathlon CMA CGM released a statement on Thursday that Benoot’s winter preparation was interrupted by back pain, with medical tests later confirming a hernia that required surgery.

“During his winter preparation Tiesj Benoot suffered from back pain, which disrupted his training schedule,” the team explained, adding that the condition was identified as a hernia and that surgery was necessary.

The operation has been completed successfully, and Benoot has already begun the first steps of recovery. Jacky Maillot, head of the team’s medical staff, underlined that the next phase will be determined by how his rehabilitation progresses.

“Tiesj Benoot was successfully operated on this week for a hernia in his lower back,” Maillot said. “He is now starting his recovery period. His return to the peloton will depend on his recovery.”

Benoot’s absence is a major blow for Decathlon CMA CGM, who brought the Belgian in from Visma | Lease a Bike to lead their spring campaign.

For Benoot, it means missing the classics entirely, something he has never had to do before. “It is a real disappointment to miss the classics for the first time in my career,” he said. “I will be the team’s biggest fan from my TV. I am motivated to come back at a stronger level.”

He also thanked the team for backing him through the setback. “Many thanks to the team for the trust in these difficult times,” Benoot added.
