Paul Magnier powers to another sprint victory in Volta ao Algarve

Paul Magnier claimed stage 4 of the Volta ao Algarve with a measured and authoritative sprint in Lagos, delivering another victory for Soudal Quick-Step after a long day of control from the peloton.

The 175 kilometre stage from Albufeira to Lagos offered few obstacles on paper. The ascent of Nave, 5.6 kilometres at 4.2 percent, provided the only notable test, but the profile suggested that the pure fast men would have their opportunity if the peloton maintained control.

An eight rider break went clear early but was caught with 25 kilometres left. From there, Tudor, UAE Team Emirates-XRG and Lidl-Trek helped keep things in check before the sprint trains took over.

A headwind into Lagos made teams hesitate and the fight for position got messy. A late crash involving Johannes Staune Mittet (Decathlon CMA CGM) caused a brief scare but didn’t affect the main sprinters.

Inside the last kilometre, the field stretched under pressure. With just over 700 metres remaining, Tim Torn Teutenberg (Lidl-Trek) went early and dragged the sprint out, turning it into a long, hard effort. Then, with 200 metres left and a gap finally there, Magnier launched. One sharp jump and he was clear. Jordi Meeus (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) chased but couldn’t get back on terms, and Oded Kogut (NSN Cycling Team) came through for third.

Post-race the French rider explained his approach for the sprint: “I didn’t want to get boxed in,” he told Cycling Pro Net. “So I preferred to take a bit of wind in that last straight to be sure I could launch my sprint.”

Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) stayed safe near the front and kept the yellow jersey, with no splits among the GC riders. Tomorrow the riders will face the final and decisive stage through rolling terrain before everything funnels into the final Malhão climb.
