Mystery solved in Liège: wrist sponsor behind Pogacar’s revoked fine
The controversy surrounding Tadej Pogacar after his victory at Liège–Bastogne–Liège turned out to be far less straightforward than initially assumed. What began as a striking penalty of 5,000 Swiss francs for an alleged issue with his world champion jersey quickly unraveled, with the fine being withdrawn just hours later and quietly removed from the official jury report.

At first, officials cited an “incorrect placement of advertising” on the rainbow jersey during the podium ceremony in the jury report. That explanation sparked confusion and debate, particularly given the unusually high amount for what is typically considered a minor infringement. Much of the attention focused on the chest area and how sponsor logos were positioned in relation to the iconic rainbow bands.
However, the real issue appears to have been elsewhere. According to Sporza, which made further inquiries into the case, concerns had already been raised a day earlier during the team presentation.
Pogačar was wearing a long sleeve version of the jersey that featured additional branding near the wrists. This detail stemmed from a personal sponsorship deal with a watch brand Richard Mille, subtly integrated into the cuff area. According to the on site commissaire, that specific placement constituted a violation. When the same jersey appeared again on the podium after the race, the fine followed.
The swift reversal, however, points to a breakdown in communication. Regulations regarding clothing and sponsor placement have recently been relaxed, meaning such additions are now permitted. That update had apparently not reached all officials, leading to the application of outdated rules in Liège.
In the end, the fine was simply scrapped. Pogačar and his UAE Team Emirates-XRG team did not have to pay, after officials acknowledged the confusion around the updated rules.
