Tour of the Alpes temporarily neutralised after heavy crash

The third stage of the Tour of the Alps was neutralised just two kilometres after the peloton set off, with riders en route to Arco, where the stage is scheduled to finish today.

The race organisers announced the neutralisation on social media: “KM 2 - A big crash in the peloton has led to a temporary stop of the race.” Around 30 riders went down, and the race was stopped for 21 minutes before it restarted.

The exact cause of the crash remains unclear, but it has been confirmed that Lorenzo Finn of Red Bull–Bora–Hansgrohe was involved and has since abandoned the race.

He is joined on the list of withdrawals by Damien Howson (Pinarello-Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), Lorenzo Nespoli (MBH Bank CSB Telecom Fort), Victor Langellotti (Ineos Grenadiers), Felix Engelhardt (Team Jayco AlUla), and Daniel Federspiel (Austria), all of whom were forced to abandon following the incident.

Following his victory yesterday, Giulio Pellizzari leads the general classification, with Thymen Arensman just four seconds behind.

Today’s stage is the longest of the race and opens with a major challenge: the 22-kilometre climb to Passo Castrin, the highest point of the Tour. After a long descent and a steady climb to Andalo, the terrain becomes more rolling. A late uphill sprint offers bonus seconds before the descent into Arco, which could favour breakaway riders or late attackers.
