Diego Uriarte (Equipo Kern Pharma) and Floris Van Tricht (NSN) have abandoned the Vuelta a España after a crash in the neutralised zone on stage 8.

Several riders went down while the race direction was waiting for a sole rider to return to the bunch following a mechanical.

The Vuelta race centre initially reported that the riders involved had remounted and continued, but Uriarte was later forced to abandon his first Grand Tour with severe rib pain.

Equipo Kern Pharma confirmed the Spaniard's withdrawal, stating: “Diego Uriarte abandons La Vuelta after suffering a fall during the neutralised start. The Navarrese cyclist, with severe rib pain, cannot continue in the race.”

Van Tricht also abandoned following the incident, ending the Belgian’s Grand Tour debut.

Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) was also involved in the crash. The Slovenian was able to continue, though he was spotted with a scuffed jersey by the TV cameras.
