Urska Zigart’s recovery takes positive turn after heavy Tour de Suisse crash
Urska Zigart has been given an encouraging update in her recovery from the heavy crash she suffered at the Tour de Suisse Women, with AG Insurance-Soudal confirming that the Slovenian will not need surgery on her fractured jaw.

Žigart went down in the closing kilometre of stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse Women, shortly before the one kilometre banner, as a chasing group entered Locarno. The 29-year-old hit a traffic calming feature in the road and crashed heavily, with several other riders also brought down in the incident.
She was treated by the race medical team before being taken to hospital, where scans confirmed a jaw fracture.
The latest update, shared by both the team and Žigart on social media, was considerably more positive. Following further medical evaluation and follow up examinations, AG Insurance-Soudal confirmed that surgery will not be required, allowing Žigart to continue her recovery in what the team described as a more straightforward way.
The team also revealed that Žigart has already been able to gradually resume training under close medical supervision. Her return is being managed carefully, with a step by step approach as she builds back towards her future goals.
No date has been set for her return to racing, and although the Tour de France Femmes is now on the horizon, the team made clear that the focus remains on managing her recovery properly rather than rushing her back into competition.
The crash has also reopened the wider debate around rider safety in professional cycling. In the days after the crash, CPA Women said the incident once again raised questions about how risks are identified and addressed.
The riders’ union, which is represented within SafeR, said cycling’s current safety structures must now be reviewed and strengthened. “The time has come to review and strengthen the way SafeR operates,” CPA Women said, calling for clearer structures, stronger tools and more authority to prevent dangerous situations before they lead to crashes.
Since then, the matter has not been addressed publicly.
