Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike) stormed his way into the lead of the Volta a Catalunya after climbing to victory in La Molina on stage 5.

The Dane proved to be the strongest rider on the final ascent of the Coll de Pal, which had been shortened by 2.2 km at the start of the stage due to strong winds.

Vingegaard made his first attack with around 7 km to go, closing the gap to earlier attacks on the slopes, before dispatching the competition with just under 6 km remaining.

Without looking back, Vingegaard pressed on and extended his gap to 0:51 over Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) in second by the summit, while Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious) finished third at 1:01, winning a sprint ahead of Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step).

It marks Vingegaard’s fourth victory of the 2026 season so far and puts him in a strong position to win his second WorldTour stage race of the season following Paris-Nice.

Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe) finished sixth on the stage at 1:38, while João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Tom Pidcock (Pinarello-Q36.5) both crashed on the descent of the penultimate climb, with the latter unable to return to the GC group before the start of the Coll de Pal.

In terms of the GC picture, Vingegaard has grasped control of proceedings, holding an advantage of 0:57 over Gall in 2nd, while Martinez rounds out the current podium standings at 1:09..

In the early phases of the race, a group consisting of 20 riders found themselves clear of the peloton with an advantage of over 30 seconds, with the likes of Florian Lipowitz, Sepp Kuss and Matthew Riccitello involved. Eventually, five riders from within the group pushed clear as the rest were caught by the peloton.

The quartet of breakaway riders included Junior Lecerf (Soudal Quick-Step), Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), Davide Piganzoli (Visma | Lease a Bike), Einer Rubio (Movistar) and Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates-XRG).

On the slopes of the Coll de Fumanya, Lecerf found himself detached from his breakaway companions, and Rubio was distanced on the next climb, the Collada Sobirana.

There was plenty of action on the descent of the Collada Sobriana, unfortunately, in the way of crashes.

A crash with 28km remaining involving two Visma | Lease a Bike riders and Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost) saw a split in the peloton. João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Tom Pidcock (Pinarello-Q36.5) also fell on the descent.

Following the descent, the GC group was trimmed in size with Red Bull at the front and Vingegaard isolated. Almeida eventually rejoined as part of a second chase group with 22km remaining, though Pidcock was still behind.

Meanwhile, Ciccone pushed on from the breakaway and held an advantage of just under a minute over the peloton into the final climb.

With 10km remaining, Mikel Landa kicked off the action from the GC group with an attack and was immediately followed by Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) with Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) present at the front also, but the gap was closed by the chase pack with Bahrain-Victorious swarming on the front.

Gall was very active, launching his own attack with 9.3km remaining, and Lipowitz was once more the rider to react, alongside Martinez, with Juan Pedro López (Movistar)  jumping across. The duo build up an advantage of around 15 seconds.

The Austrian attacked once more, dispatching Lopez and opening a gap on Lipowitz and Martinez briefly before the duo closed the deficit. All the while, Ciccone remained out front, though his advantage had dwindled to the 30-second mark with 8km remaining.

Almeida found himself distanced from the chasing pack with 7.5km remaining, but it remained to be seen whether it was the crash impacting the Portuguese rider or if it was his regular style of riding at his own tempo.

Just as Almeida was returning to the chase pack, Jonas Vingegaard launched his first attack, with Remco Evenepoel locked on the wheel.

The Dane continued to push the pace with Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step) on the wheel and opened a gap on Evenepoel with 6.5km remaining. This attack caught the chase group and Vingegaard’s relentless pace.

Ciccone was swept up with just under 6km remaining, and it marked the moment when Vingegaard found himself alone, with nobody able to match the relentless tempo of the Dane.

Lipowitz jumped from the first chase group in an attempt to distance Gall, Martinez, Paret-Peintre and Ciccone, in the second but the German couldn’t initially break clear.

Evenepoel was part of the third group on the road alongside, but there was a lack of coordination in both the second and third groups as riders tried to attack.

In the end, Vingegaard extended his advantage all the way to the summit, while Gall managed to break clear of the chase pack to take second on the stage, while Martinez won the sprint for 3rd. Evenepoel led the second chase group home in 6th.
