Biography of pro cyclist Ethan Vernon
Ethan Vernon is a British sprinter who built his foundation on the track before making his mark on the road. Quick, punchy and able to handle uphill finishes, he has become one of Britain's most promising fast men.
His career bridges two disciplines: a decorated track racer and world champion, and a maturing road sprinter chasing wins at the highest level.
Early life and rise
Born in Bedford, Vernon started out in BMX before switching his focus to track racing at around 14, developing in Newport. As a junior he was prolific, winning multiple national track titles, and he went on to claim the elite world title in the elimination race in 2023.
His track speed and racecraft made the transition to road sprinting a natural one, and he turned professional in 2022 with the Soudal Quick-Step set-up before moving to Israel–Premier Tech.
Track world title and road breakthrough
Vernon's elimination-race world championship confirmed his standing among the fastest and sharpest riders on the track. On the road, he opened his account at the top level with wins including the opening stage of the Tour des Alpes-Maritimes and two stages at the 2024 Tour of Guangxi.
Volta a Catalunya wins and recent results
Vernon's WorldTour profile grew further in 2025, when he won stage two of the Volta a Catalunya in a high-speed uphill sprint, narrowly holding off compatriot Matthew Brennan. He returned to win again at the Volta a Catalunya in 2026, underlining his ability to win from a fast, selective finish rather than only flat bunch sprints.
Rider profile: strengths, style, and characteristics
Vernon is a sprinter with track-honed speed and positioning, but his ambition is to be more than a pure flat finisher. He targets the hillier, more selective sprints where heavier fast men are distanced, aiming to separate himself on demanding finishes. That versatility, combined with his raw pace, gives him a broad range of winnable days.
Personal life
Vernon came up through British Cycling's track programme, a pathway that has produced many of the country's top road professionals. His progression from BMX to the track to the WorldTour reflects the depth of the British development system.
