Biography of pro cyclist Usoa Ostolaza
Usoa Ostolaza is a Spanish climber who has become the standard-bearer for the Basque Laboral Kutxa-Fundación Euskadi project. In a sport increasingly defined by all-rounders, she is a rider who comes alive when the road tilts upward.
Her rise from promising domestic talent to a top-ten finisher in the biggest Spanish stage race has made her one to watch, especially in the mountainous races of her home region.
Early life and rise in Spain
Born in Zarautz on the Basque coast in 1998, Ostolaza grew up in one of cycling's most passionate heartlands. She developed within the Spanish racing scene and found a natural home at Laboral Kutxa-Fundación Euskadi, the Basque-backed team that has built its identity around developing regional talent.
Her early professional seasons were about learning the demands of stage racing and refining her climbing. Progress was steady rather than instant, but each year she edged closer to the front of the biggest races.
National title and breakthrough results
The defining result of Ostolaza's rise came in 2024, when she won the Spanish National Road Race Championship, a title that confirmed her as one of the country's best. She backed it up with overall victory at the Tour Féminin International des Pyrénées, a mountainous stage race that suits her perfectly, sealed with a stage win.
Top results at La Vuelta Femenina
In 2026, Ostolaza delivered her biggest result yet: fourth place overall at La Vuelta Femenina, the most important stage race on Spanish soil. Holding her own against the world's best climbers and GC riders over a full week of racing marked her arrival as a Grand Tour-level contender, and made her one of the most-watched names heading into her home race, the Itzulia Women.
Rider profile: strengths and style
Ostolaza is, first and foremost, a climber. Her strength lies in sustained efforts on long mountain passes, where she can ride at a high tempo and follow the best. As a GC rider she pairs that climbing ability with solid time-trialling and the consistency needed to hold a high overall position across a multi-day race. Bunch sprints are not her terrain; mountain finishes are where she does her best work.
Personal life
Proudly Basque, Ostolaza races for a team deeply rooted in her home region, and competing in front of home crowds at races like the Itzulia Women carries special meaning for her. Her commitment to the Laboral Kutxa project is reflected in her contract, which she extended through 2027.
