Route
The 2026 route starts in Bergamo and finishes in Como, covering 239km and 4,845m of elevation gain. The race begins with a series of climbs through the Bergamo Prealps, including the 10.1km Selvino (5.9%), followed by Colle di Berbenno (4.5km at 6.3%) and the tougher Valpiana (10.1km at 6.2%).
A flatter section follows before the new Giovenzana climb, just 3.6km long but averaging a punishing 9.2% with gradients up to 16%. With 103km remaining, the race heads towards Lecco and Lake Como before reaching Bellagio and the iconic Madonna del Ghisallo, an 8.6km climb averaging 6.2% that could prove decisive.
After descending into Como, the riders tackle San Fermo before crossing the finish line and beginning the final 22km circuit. The steep Civiglio climb, 4.2km at 9.7%, comes shortly afterwards and could provide another opportunity for attacks before the riders return to San Fermo for a second ascent.
The summit comes with around 5km remaining, followed by a fast and technical descent into Como featuring tunnels and large roundabouts before the final sweeping bend and finish straight. The double San Fermo configuration was last used in 2022, when Tadej Pogačar beat Enric Mas in a two-up sprint.

Favourites
With Tadej Pogačar absent, Remco Evenepoel will lead the favourites after bouncing back from his Worlds disappointment to win the European title. Having finished second in the previous two editions, he will target his first Monument victory since Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2023, but faces strong competition from Isaac del Toro, Paul Seixas and Giulio Ciccone. Tom Pidcock is another major threat, particularly given his history on the technical descents around Como.
Juan Ayuso gives Lidl-Trek another option, while Visma | Lease a Bike arrive with momentum after Davide Piganzoli’s Giro dell’Emilia victory and strong recent results from Matteo Jorgenson. With several riders capable of attacking on the final climbs and descents, the absence of Pogačar should create a more open and tactical battle for victory.
