“Unfortunately, my training ride ended with an accident,” Groenewegen wrote on social media. “I was involved in a collision with a motorcyclist and suffered a muscle tear around my ribs.”

Despite the impact, the 33-year-old escaped without more serious injuries and said he considers himself fortunate given what could have happened.

“Luckily, I escaped without any more serious injuries and feel fortunate that the consequences weren’t worse,” he said.

Groenewegen is still able to ride his bike, although the pain around his ribs means it remains unclear when he will be ready to return to competition.

“I’m still able to ride my Rose bike, although the pain around my ribs makes it difficult to say what the injury will mean for my upcoming races,” he explained. “We’ll monitor how it develops and assess the situation accordingly.”

Groenewegen returned to competition in August following a period of rest and extended training after the Copenhagen Sprint in June. He subsequently raced the ADAC Cyclassics before lining up at the Renewi Tour, where his chances were affected by a crash during the second stage.

He recovered sufficiently to continue racing and finished fourth on stage four, but the latest incident has created fresh uncertainty around the next part of his season.

Groenewegen stressed that the outcome of the training accident could have been significantly more serious and also used the incident to underline the importance of wearing a helmet.

“It could have been much worse, so I’m grateful to have come away from the accident with relatively minor injuries,” he said. “Again, a reminder to please always wear your helmet.”

The Dutchman thanked supporters for the messages he has received following the accident. His condition will now be monitored in the coming days before a decision is made on his upcoming races.
