Evenepoel solos over 50km to first Red Bull road race win with monster margin at Trofeo Serra Tramuntana

It was day three of the Challenge Mallorca series, and it was the toughest day of the series with the Trofeo Serra Tramuntana, which involved over 2400 metres of elevation, with Remco Evenepoel poised to take further glory after the record-breaking team time trial by the German outfit the day prior.

The day began tightly packed, as no riders were able to form a breakaway until over 45 kilometres into the race, due to the flat start from Selva. Escapees involved heading onto the Coll de Femenia were Grand Tour treble member, Magnus Cort (Uno-X), Pablo Castrillo (Movistar), who was one of the shining stars of the 2024 Vuelta, Spanish talent, 19-year-old Adria Pericas (UAE Team Emirates), Martin Tjøtta (Uno-X), Alex Tolio (Bardiani CSF 7 Saber), and Diego Uriarte (Equipo Kern Pharma).

After tackling and descending the Coll de Puig Major, live images were provided with the breakaway's advantage a slim one, sitting at just over 1:30 with Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe holding a tight leash on the bunch of escapees up the road.

It wasn't long after until Remco Evenepoel launched a trademark Evenepoel attack near the summit of the Coll de Sóller and blasted past the break with only a handful of riders able to hang on the back including the young Pericas. Towards the bottom of the descent of the Sóller, that was where the multiple world champion cruised away, on a solo effort to Santuari de Lluc with still over 40 kilometres to go.

Behind the solo Evenepoel, there was a real lack of cohesion as group 2 swelled in numbers to around 20-30 riders until hitting the 20-kilometre mark, where a small group containing Enric Mas (Movistar) snuck clear, but their advantage was a mere handful of seconds with group 3 never letting them leave their sight and they were brought back as teams established trains behind.

Evenepoel was a cut above the rest and built an advantage of over two minutes as he was able to take a fine solo victory in Mallorca, demonstrating some strong form as he builds up to the UAE Tour in February. His next road appearance will be in the Trofeo Andratx - Pollença on Saturday.

The battle for the remaining podium places became a real scrap with riders such as Johannes Kulset (Uno-X) and Antonio Morgado (UAE Team Emirates) looking the freshest of the reduced group. Joining Evenepoel on the podium was Morgado in second and Christian Scaroni (XDS-Astana) in third.
